| dc.description.abstract | India is an agricultural economy unlike other developed countries, which are industrial economies. The country depends, to a large extent, on agriculture. Crop cultivation sustains almost two-third of the Indian population. India’s economic security continues to be dependent upon the agriculture sector and the situation is not likely to change in the foreseeable future. At present, agriculture supports 58 per cent of the population, as against about 75 per cent at the time of independence. For the same period, the contribution of agriculture and allied sectors to the Gross Domestic Product has fallen from 61 to 19 per cent. Around 51 per cent of India’s geographical area is already under cultivation as compared to 11 per cent of the World’s average. It is generally acknowledged that organic agriculture can contribute to socioeconomic and ecologically sustainable development, especially in developing countries. The market for organic products is growing and offers producers, manufacturers and exporters to improve their incomes and living conditions. The present area under organic farming in India is 2.5 million hectares including certified forest areas and the global area under organic farming is 26 million hectares along with 61 standards and 364 certification bodies. The present world organic market is about 26 billion US$. | en_US |
