Abstract
ABSTRACT
The present investigation entitled “Studies on the effect of seed treatments on seedling health in bell
pepper” was carried out at the Department of Seed Science and Technology, Dr. YS Parmar University of
Horticulture and Forestry (Nauni) Solan (HP) during 2021 and 2022. Total four experiments were conducted in
which three were conducted under in-vitro conditions and one under nursery conditions. First experiment was on
effect of chemical seed treatments on seed quality parameters. New combi-fungicides were used along with
recommended fungicide Captan @ 0.3% and untreated control. Seeds treatment with Propiconazole +
Difenoconazole @ 0.2%, Hexaconazole + Zineb @ 0.3 and Difenoconazole + Propineb @ 0.3% resulted in
highest germination of 97.33% followed by Cymoxanil + mancozeb @ 0.3 with 95.58% germination. Seed
treatment with Propiconazole + Difenoconazole @ 0.2 resulted in maximum seedling length (14.11cm), seed
vigour index-I (1373.55) and seed vigour index-II (273.85) followed by Cymoxanil + mancozeb @ 0.3.
Minimum seed microflora was observed in seeds treated with Tebuconazole + Captan @ 3%. Second experiment
was on effect of seed treatment with bio-agents on seed quality parameters. Seed treatment with Trichoderma
viride and T. virens both with the concentration of 10% resulted in highest germination of 95.33% followed by
seeds treated with Pseudomonas fluorescens @ 10% with 94.67% germination. Seed treatment with T.
harzianum @ 5% resulted in maximum seedling length (13.36cm) and seed vigour index-I (1211.18). Minimum
seed microflora was observed in seeds treated with T. virens, T. viride and T. harzianum. Third experiment was
on effect of seed treatment with plant extracts on seed quality parameters. Seed treatment with Aloe vera @ 25%
resulted in highest germination of 96.75% followed by seeds treated with Roylea elegans @ 25% with 95.25%
germination. Seed treatment with Ocimum sanctum @ 25% resulted in maximum seed vigour index-I (1271.17).
Minimum seed microflora was observed in seeds treated with Garlic @ 25 and 50%. Fourth experiment was on
effect of seed treatment with chemicals, bioagents and plant extracts on seedling health under nursery conditions.
Three best treatments were used on the basis of results obtained from each Experiment I, II and III along with
recommended fungicide Captan @ 3% and untreated control. Seed treatment with O. sanctum @ 25% resulted in
maximum total emergence (94.67%), speed of germination (98.89), seedling length above ground (13.30cm) and
seedling vigour index-I (1941.17) followed by seeds treated with T. harzianum @ 10%. Minimum pre and postemergence
disease incidence was observed in seeds treated with Tulsi @ 25% followed by T. harzianum @ 10%
under nursery conditions. It can be concluded from the study that seed treatments with extract of Tulsi (Ocimum
sanctum) @ 25% or T. harzianum @ 10% significantly improved emergence, growth parameters, vigour of
seedlings and reduced post emergence damping off in bell pepper cv. Solan Bharpur.
