Water is becoming a scarce commodity for agriculture in many regions. It is, therefore, required to use all the sources of water present in a watershed through proper planning and interventions. Thus there is a great need to estimate the total utilizable potential of water resources in the forms of surface runoff generated and ground water in the watershed. The present study was conducted in the Tauru watershed, which has a geographical area of 4021 ha. In order to quantify the surface water resources in the watershed; Satellite imagery of the study area was classified into 5 major classes by supervised classification technique in ENVI and the surface runoff was determined by USDA SCS-Curve Number method. The average annual runoff (during the period of 2006-2011) was estimated as 132 ha-m. The maximum and minimum annual runoff volume was also found to be 546.36 ha-m and 0.84 ha-m respectively over the same period. The 'Water Table Fluctuation Method' was used to estimate the availability of groundwater in the area. The average annual groundwater availability was found to be 794 ha-m, out of which 675 ha-m can be safely used for irrigation. However this can not satisfy the irrigation requirement of the area which comes out to be 1275.78 ha-m leads to over extraction of grounden_US
