Abstract
An experiment was conducted at the Floriculture unit of the Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, GKVK campus, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, during 2016-17 on “Studies on the efficacy of media incorporated with Pusa Hydrogel on growth and quality of coleus (Coleus blumei L.) under polyhouse condition”. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with four replications and five treatments. Four different concentrations of Pusa Hydrogel @10g, 20g, 30g, 40g each were mixed with 5kg of potting media before planting, and set as treatments. The results of the experiment indicated that treatment 5 (40 gm of Pusa Hydrogel per 5kg of potting media) and treatment 4 (30 gm of Pusa Hydrogel per 5kg of potting media) were found to be on par and recorded significantly higher growth and water use efficiency over control. Maximum plant height (38.5cm), number of branches (18.1), plant spread in both East-West and North-South directions (42.00 cm and 41.25 cm respectively), stem diameter (1.27 cm), number of leaves (92.2), leaf length and width (8.2 and 5.4 cm respectively) petiole length and girth (2.6 cm and 2.3 respectively), shoot fresh and dry weight (130.0 gm and 12.25 gm respectively), root fresh and dry weight (36.0 and 6.50 gm respectively), root length (25.0 cm) and volume (24.0 cm3) and chlorophyll content (SPAD value of 30.63) was recorded in treatment-T5 which was on par with the treatment-T4 and least values were observed in control. Significantly least cumulative quantity of water (22.7 litre), frequency of watering (once in 2.85 days) and highest BC ratio (1:40) was recorded in the same treatment (T5) followed by treatment T4 when compared to control (37.8, 1.09 and 1.06 respectively). Water saving to an extent of 39% could be achieved by the application of pusa hydrogel @ 40 gm per 5 kg of potting media in coleus production.
