Abstract
The investigation on variation studies in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) was conducted on 62 genotypes of chickpea to know the variability, interrelationship among yield and its components, their direct and indirect effect on seed yield. Observations were recorded for days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, plant height, plant spread, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight, protein content and seed yield per plant. A wide range of variability was observed for all the characters except number of primary branches per plant and number of seeds per pod. The character pods per plant exhibited highest range of variability followed by plant spread, plant height, days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, seed yield per plant, 100 seed weight. Protein content and number of secondary branches per plant showed moderate amount of variation. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were highest for seed yield per plant followed by pods per plant, plant spread, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant and 100 seed weight. High heritability associated with high genetic advance was observed for number of pods per plant, seed yield per plant, plant spread, number of primary and secondary branches per plant, 100 seed weight and number of seeds per pod suggesting that selection of these traits would be effective for the desired improvement in chickpea. The straight selection on the basis of phenotypic performance alone would not, therefore be rewarding in the improvement of these traits, indicating non additive gene action and breeding methods, to exploit non additive gene action through heterosis may be followed. The significant positive correlation was reported between seed yield per plant and primary branches per plant followed by secondary branches per plant, number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight, days to maturity, days to 50 per cent flowering and plant height.
