India is the second most populous and the seventh largest country in the world. With only 2. 4 per cent of the world's total land area, India has to support 15 percent of the world's total population of around 4. 5 billions in 1981. One of the salient demographic features of our country is that it has a sizable proportion of young population. According to 1981 estimate, 39 per cent of the total population of 685 million people were in 0-14 age group, of whom about 78 per cent lived in rural areas and 22 per cent in urban areas. There were about 121 million children in the age group of 0-6 years. According to population projections, India's child population would increase from 263 million in 1981 to 333 million in 2001 i.e. more than the total population of USSR. Thus children and people in reproductive age groups predominate the population composition creating an unfavorable age structure with a large proportion of juvenile population, resulting in a high dependency ratio and slower rate of increase in country's labour force. This high proportion of child population in our country warrants the need for providing living conditions which will enable children to realize their full potentialities for development.en_US
