Twenty isolates were identified as Yersinia species by the conventional biochemical method from a total of 2431 samples of milk and milk products analyzed at Chennai, India which include 9 Yersinia enterocolitica (0.37%), 6 Y. frederiksenii (0.25%) and 5 Y. kristensenii (0.21%). It is important to determine the control measures on the growth of Y. enterocolitica by certain preservatives like antibiotics, spice oil and lactic acid bacteria. Among the various antibiotics tested, ciprofloxacin (5 mcg) and tetracycline (30 mcg) were the most effective against Y. enterocolitica, whereas, penicillin (10 units) was the most ineffective. Spice oils like cinnamon and clove oils (20 ul each) showed highest inhibition zones against K enteroco/itica and no inhibition was observed for cumin and lemongrass oils. None of the three lactic cultures (100 ul) viz. Lactococcus /actis ssp. Iactis, Lactococcus Iactis ssp. cremoris and Lactobacillus acidophilus showed any inhibition against Y.en_US
