Abstract
The efficacy of the double intramedullary pinning and cerclage wiring technique in femur fracture healing in dogs was evaluated based on clinical, radiological and biochemical studies during post-operative period of 60 days. Animals started weight bearing between 5th and 14th post-operative days and attained full weight bearing on 50th day. Radiologically by 8th week there was abundant periosteal callus with persistence of fracture line. Osteomedullography revealed reestablishment of intaosseous and extraosseous network. There was a significant reduction in the serum calcium values on 3rd post-operative day, increase in serum inorganic phosphorus level on 3rd post-operative day and reached peak level of serum alkaline phosphatase on 15th post-operative day. Double Intramedullary pinning and cerclage wiring technique was found to be simple and effective internal fixation technique for femoral diaphyseal oblique fractures in dogs.
