Abstract
The present study was conducted at Department of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK campus, Bengaluru, during 2009-10 to evaluate the vase life of ten different gerbera cultivars viz., Esmora, Shangria, Winter queen, Ambra, Dana Ellen, Goliath, Sun city, President, Mammut and Sun way using different treatment combination. Observations were recorded for water uptake, water loss, water uptake: water loss ratio, water balance, fresh weight and vase life. Among the cultivars evaluated, Ambra, Mammut and Winter queen showed maximum vase life whereas, cultivars President, Sun city and Sun way showed optimum vase life. However cultivars Dana Ellen, Goliath, Shangria, Esmora showed comparatively less vase life. In many of the cultivars tested, treatment 300ppm Sodium benzoate +6% sucrose + 400 ppm 8-HQS showed better results followed by 200ppm Sodium benzoate +4% sucrose+ 100ppm Silver thiosulphate + 200 ppm 8-HQS with respect to water uptake, water loss, fresh weight which ultimately led to increase in vase life of 14 days and 10.43 days respectively when compared to control (6.23 days). Present study revealed that among different chemical combinations tested, treatments with chemicals viz, sodium benzoate, silver nitrate, sucrose and 8-HQS showed promising influence on vase life of cut gerbera flowers.
