The study was undertaken with the objective of analyzing the structural transformation of major crops in Shivamoggan district of Karnataka. The study was based on secondary data collected from Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Bengaluru and Joint Director Office, Shivamogga. The study revealed that traditional crops such as paddy, ragi, redgram, sunflower, cotton, sugarcane, jowar whose area and production are declining and are being replaced with commercial crops such as arecanut, maize, ginger, banana and coconut. The increase in area and production of there crops is mainly attributed to increased profitability. The Markov chain analysis revealed that paddy had the highest area retention capacity followed by arecanut and jowar in Period I (1990- 91 to 2002-03) with 89.70, 80.60 and 76.80 per cent, respectively whereas in Period II (2003-04 to 2019-20) arecanut had the highest area retention followed by paddy and maize with 97.80, 90.30 and 79.32 per cent, respectively. In majority of the selected crops, the change in mean area, change in mean yield and change in area- yield covariance contributes positively towards the change in average production of crops. Similarly, change in areayield covariance, interaction between changes in mean yield and area variance, change in yield variance and change in residuals contributed positively towards instability in change in variance of production. The important underlying relationship depicted by Factor 1 includes PLD Banks, number of children and total markets are the major components of agriculture infrastructure which influence the degree of structural transformation.en_US
