In the present work, a numerical study using finite element is performed to investigate the free transverse vibration response of composite stepped cantilever beam. Composite beams and beam like elements are major constituents of various structures and used widely in aircraft and lightweight structures. Crack is a damage that often occurs in members of structures and may cause sudden serious failure (catastrophic failure) of the structures. The effect of cracks on dynamic characteristics like natural frequencies, modes of vibration of structures has been the subject of various investigations. However the parametric studies like effect of geometry, crack location and support conditions on the natural frequencies of composite stepped beam are scarce in the literature. The finite element software ANSYS is used to simulate the free transverse vibrations. A variety of parametric studies are carried out to see the effects of various changes in the laminate parametric on the natural frequencies. The parameters investigated include the effects of ply angle of the fibers, the location of cracks relative to the restricted end, depth of cracks, fiber volume fraction and support conditions. An increase in the depth of the cracks leads to a decrease in the values of natural frequencies, crack location also has great effect over natural frequencies in case of free transverse vibration and support has also great effect natural frequency, in case of clamped-clamped configuration the value of natural frequency is higher than clamped free configuration.en_US
