Abstract
A field experiment was conducted at Department of Horticulture, University of
Agricultural Sciences Dharwad, to quantify the magnitude of genetic variability generated in
segregating generations, to isolate desirable segregants and response to selection for yield and
quality characters in SCF4, SCF5, DCF3 and DCF4 generations of tomato (Lycopersicon
esculentum Mill.).
Mean performance of DCF4 for yield per plant was not much higher than SCF4 s. Of
the 14 entries the best entry was single cross F4 DTHVI-5 which exhibited higher yield per
plant. For yield per plant among DCF3, DTH4U-1 x DTH5N-3 entry has greater genetic
variability, while in DCF4, DTH5N-3 x DTHVI-5 entry has exhibited greater genetic
variability within SCF4, DTH4U-1 entry has greater genetic variability. In SCF5, DTHVI-5
had moderately higher genetic variability. The extent of genetic variation manifested by
DCF4 was of higher magnitude than SCF4 as depicted from the higher mean values over the
SCF4 for the yield per plant. The frequency of economic and desirable segregants was higher
in DCs than SCs. For the traits number of fruits per plant, fruit weight and yield per plant
DCF3 entries DTHCS-7 x DTH5N-3 I (12-3) and DTHCS-7 x DTH5N-3 I (13-5) gave
higher number of desirable segregants and within DCF4 DTHCS-7 x DTH5N-3 I (12-3)/ K-
06 I (19-2) and DTH5N-3 x DTHVI-5 I (10-10)/K-06 I (18-14) entries gave higher desirable
segregants. For the traits number of fruits per plant, fruit weight and yield per plant SCF4
entries DTHCS-7 I (57-1) and DTHVI-5 I (49-5) gave higher number of desirable segregants
and within SCF5 DTHVI-5 II (29-5) /K-06 I (13-13) and DTHCS-7 I (37-1)/K-06 II (9-12)
entries gave higher desirable segregants.
At both genotypic and phenotypic levels fruit diameter expressed higher significant
positive correlation. Path analysis showed that number of fruits per plant and fruit weight had
highly positive direct effect on fruit yield which also had highly significant positive
correlation with fruit yield. Other traits such as diameter of fruits and plant height at 45 DAT
and at final harvest exhibited fairly positive direct effect.
