The present investigation entitled “Response of winter maize to vegetable intercrops pertaining to growth, yield and economics” was conducted during the winter season in the years 2010-2011 at the Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The effect of different treatment on growth, yield parameters, yield, economics and different production factors found to be varied during the experimentation. The intercrops did not affect the growth and yield of maize crop. The intercrop (radish, spinach and carrot) under paired row planting of maize produced maximum grain yield of maize. Uptake of total N, P and K by maize grain was higher where grain yield was greater. Maize + carrot intercropping under paired row (100 - 50) planting of maize gave maximum net return and benefit cost ratio than other treatments. On the basis of the experimental results conducted for single year any valid recommendation cannot be made, never the less, it can be suggested that maize + carrot intercropping system under paired row (100 - 50 cm) planting pattern of maize is highly economic and sustainable than pure cultivation of maize during winter season.en_US
