An experiment was conducted to study the performance of meat type Japanese quail on diets with reduced levels of crude protein supplemented with L-lysine and DL-methionine from day-old to 5 weeks of age. In the first experiment, the treatment groups consisted of diet with 27 per cent crude protein with 1.3 per cent lysine and 0.48 per cent methionine as control and 25, 23 and 21 per cent crude protein with 1.3 per cent lysine and 0.48 per cent methionine or 1.5 per cent lysine and 0.56 per cent methionine as test for first two weeks. The best level of crude protein, lysine and methionine in the starter diet was found out based on the body weight gain at the end of second week which was used for feeding the Japanese quail chicks in the second experiment up to two weeks of age. In the second experiment, the treatment groups consisted of diet with 24 per cent crude protein with 1.2 per cent lysine and 0.45 per cent methionine as control and 22, 20 and 18 per cent crude protein with 1.2 per cent lysine and 0.45 per cent methionine or 1.4 per cent lysine and 0.52 per cent methionine as test for the last three weeks. There was no significant difference in growth performances viz. body weight gain, cumulative feed consumption, feed conversion ratio and livability, between the treatment groups during the both starter and growing periods. Similarly, the carcass characteristics such as eviscerated, giblets, ready – to – cook and breast muscle yield percentage at 5th week of age did not differ between the treatment groups. The mean per cent moisture content of muscle had no significant difference between treatment groups. Significantly higher (P<0.01) protein content of muscle was observed in the group fed 18 per cent crude protein with 1.2 per cent lysine and 0.45 per cent methionine. Diet with 22 per cent crude protein with 1.2 per cent lysine and 0.45 per cent methionine significantly (P<0.01) increased the ether extract content of muscle. Significantly lowest breast and thigh muscle cholesterol (P<0.01, P<0.05, respectively) were observed in the group fed 24 per cent crude protein with 1.2 per cent lysine and 0.45 per cent methionine. Serum characteristics viz. total protein, albumin, and globulin and total cholesterol showed no significant difference between treatment groups. Net profit over feed cost was highest in the group fed 18 per cent crude protein with 1.2 per cent lysine and 0.45 per cent methionine (Rs.6.00).en_US
