Abstract
The experiment comprising of 141 genotypes selected from
rice germplasm IGAU, Raipur and 3 standard check varieties, was
conducted during Kharif 2000. The characters under study were divided
into two sets as Set-I and Set-II, where, Set-I comprised of 7
morphological characters and Set-II comprised of 7 quality characters.
Characterization of aromatic rice accessions was undertaken in
form of written evidence for the traditional rice germplasm of
Chhattisgarh.
The mean for panicle length was 22.24 cm, for fertile spikelets
per panicle the mean was 103.29, for brown rice length, the mean was
observed to be 5.62 mm, for head rice recovery percentage the mean
was observed to be 54.01 per cent, similarly for grain yield per plant
the mean was 10.14 g and for brown rice elongation ratio the mean was
1.53. The range for panicle length varied from a minimum of 12.05 cm
to a maximum of 30.85 cm, similarly, for fertile spikelets per panicle
it varied from 21 to 237.50, for brown rice length it varied from 3.97
mm to 7.68 mm, for brown rice elongation ratio it varied from 1.26
to 2.04, for head rice recovery it varied from 27.49 per cent to 74.18
per cent. Similarly, for grain yield per plant the value ranged from a
minimum of 4.61 g to 15.50 g.
Results of the analysis of variance indicated that the mean
sum of squares due to genotypes were highly significant for all the
characters.. Highest heritability was observed for amylose content and
brown rice L/B ratio. High heritability was observed for almost all
characters like fertile spikelels per panicle, spikelet sterility percentage,
1000-grain weight, rough rice length in Set - I. The ear bearing tillers
per plant and panicle length had moderate heritability.
In Set-II high heritability was observed for the characters such
as brown rice length, brown rice breadth, brown rice elongation ratio,
amylose content, alkali spreading value, head rice recovery percentage.
The D2 analysis indicated the presence of appreciable genetic
diversity in the material. The 144 genotypes were grouped in two sets
as Set-I and Set-II, each having eight clusters. The genotypes Dubraj,
Badshahbhog, Vishnubhog, Kalajira, Rajim-14, Dumarphool etc. were
selected, on the basis of cluster analysis, for the improvement of both,
morphological and quality characters.
In Set-I, comprising of morphological characters, grain yield
per plant showed positive and significant correlation with panicle length.
In Set-II, comprising of quality characters, head rice recovery showed
positive and significant association with elongation ratio.
The genotypes having high degree of grain elongation S intermediate gelatinization temperature and narrow L:B ratio would be
effective criterion for improvement of quality aspects.
