Abstract
Farming system is one of the important solutions because in this approach, different
enterprises can be carefully undertaken and the location specific system can be developed
through holistic way to farming.
Study was conducted in North Konkan region of Maharashtra. Study area was
delineated in to five distinct clusters on the basis of agro-climatic parameters which appeared
to be more appropriate than NARP classifications. Cost and returns, resource use efficiency,
optimum plans and constraints were studied for existing farming systems in each region.
Study revealed necessity of promoting region specific farming systems such as Paddy
+ Irrigated plantations + Dairy, Paddy + Irrigated plantations + Flowers and Irrigated
plantations + Dairy in north coastal plains; Paddy + Other cereals + Rainfed plantation +
Dairy and Paddy + Vegetables + Poultry in northern central plains and hills, Paddy +
Vegetables + Dairy, Paddy + Pulses + Dairy + Poultry and Paddy + Rainfed plantations +
Dairy in southern central plains and hills. Paddy + Rainfed plantation + Dairy, Paddy +
Irrigated plantations + Rainfed plantation + Dairy and Paddy + Irrigated plantations +
Vegetables + Dairy in southern coastal plains regions. Balanced use of fertilizers and
judicious use of labour is required so that it would be cost effective. The use of FYM and
organic fertilizers should be increased. Allocation of resources and rearrangement of
enterprises had greater scope in majority of farming systems. At existing resource level
(optimum plan M-I) in majority of farming systems income can be increased by more than 25
per cent. At enhanced resource level income can be increased by more than 75 per cent than
existing plan and more than 30 per cent than income at optimum plan M-I. Training on
control of Eryophite mite, farming system models, training on processing of fruit products are
necessary. Supply of the good quality seed, establishment of crop specific cooperative
marketing arrangements, network of warehouses were some of the measures to facilitate and
regulation of market practices in adoption of the farming systems.
