Abstract
An investigation entitled/'Effect of application of N through urea and FYM and their combinations on physico chemical properties of vertisol and yield of forage maize (Zen mays L.)u was laid out in completely randomised block design with six treatments and four replications at the Agricultural College, Pune during rabi, 1997, and was conducted in pot culture. Pot culture study revealed that the application of FYM and urea, alone and in combinations significantly improved the physical properties of soil under study. Application of FYM and urea, alone and in combinations revealed significant increase in EC, organic carbon, available N, P and K contents of soil under study where as the pH of the soil decreased significantly. The dry matter yield of maize showed significant improvement due to application of nitrogen through FYM and urea, alone and in combinations as compared to control at all the stages of study. N, P and K concentration in maize and their uptake at different growth stages of maize under study were significantly increased due to application of FYM and urea alone and in combinations. Nitrogen use efficiency of maize was significantly increased due to applied nitrogen through FYM and urea alone and in combinations as compared to maize without N.
