A total of 90 urban and 90 rural adolescent girls between 12 to 18 years were selected from Dharwad taluk.Information on education level, monthly income of the familyand age at menarche was collected. Nutritional status of theadolescent girls with respect to prevalence of anaemia wasassessed by dietary survey, nutritional anthropometry, clinical examination and haemoglobin analysis. Total iron and bioavailability of iron present in their diet was determined in subsamples (30).Research study revealed that, of the total sampleonly 116 girls attained menarche. Mean age at menarche was 13.28 years in urban girls and 12.74 years in rural girls. The mean intake of energy, protein, ascorbic acid, vitamin B12> folic acid and iron was lower when compared to RDA in bothurban and rural adolescent girls. Intake of vitamin B12 was significantly higher in urban girls compared to rural. Positive association was found between per cent adequacy of iron and education of the respondents. The per cent adequacy of ascorbic acid and folic acid was found to be in positive association with haemoglobin level. A significant difference was observed between height of the urban and rural adolescent girls. As the per cent adequacy of protein and energyincreased, the body mass index of the adolescent girls also increased. Rural adolescent girls showed higher incidence of deficiency signs of anaemia than urban girls. Mean haemoglobin level of urban girls was 10.5 g/dl and in rural girls 9.77g/dl. As the income increased, the haemoglobin level was also increased both in urban and rural adolescent girls. Thepercentage absorption of dietary iron was around five per cent. It was more (5.27%) in urban girls diet compared to rural (5.06%).en_US
