An investigation was carried out during winter season of 2004-05 at Vegetable Research Centre of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, district Udham Singh Nagar (Uttaranchal) to study the effect of growing medium and seedling age on the performance of tomato cv. Pant T-3. Treatments comprising of three growing media (M1 – Vermiculite + Perlite + Compost, 1:1:3; M2 – Sand + Soil + FYM, 1:1:2; M3 – Rice bran + Vermicompost, 1:2) and five seedling age (A1 – 15 days, A2 – 20 days, A3 – 25 days, A4 – 30 days, A5 35 days) were tested in all possible combinations. The observations were recorded on growth characters, maturity parameters, yield and yield attributes and quality characters. The results portrayed that growing media and seedling age individually or in combinations, influenced the growth, production and quality of tomato. The overall, evaluation indicated that the growing media containing Vermiculite + Perlite + Compost (1:1:3) followed by Sand + Soil + FYM (1:1:2) proved best. Out of 5 seedling ages, the oldest 35 days gave superior performance than in late November planting. The M1 × A5 combination was found best performer compared to any other media × age interaction. The rice bran + vermicompost media was not found good due to compacting nature of rice bran. Amongst different seedling ages, the 15 days age proved to be too tender to establish in the field.en_US
