| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT Dr. B. M. CHITTAPUR MAJOR ADVISOR A field experiment was carried out at Main Agricultural Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during kharif 2002 to study maize (cv. DMH-2) based intercropping system with grain legumes viz., Frenchbean (cv. HPR-35), ricebean (cv. RBL-1) and soybean (cv.JS-335) in 1:1 and 1:2 row proportions along with respective sole crops using Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Irrespective of row proportions, legumes did not influence performance of maize significantly. Kernel yield of maize ranged from 4404 to 4556 kg ha-k Among legumes, soybean (912 kg ha-^) and Frenchbean (863 kg ha-i) recorded significantly higher seed yields than rice bean (710 kg ha-^) and yields of these legumes under intercropping were lower than those of sole crops. Further, seed yield of legumes in 1:2 row proportion was significantly higher than the seed yield in 1:1 row proportion. Maize intercropped with legumes in 1:2 row proportion was superior in utilizing natural resources like light and soil moisture. Land equivalent ratio (1.84) in maize + Frenchbean (1:2) and area time equivalent ratio (1.65) in maize + ricebean (1:2) were higher and comparable with other treatments involving 1:2 row proportion and were significantly superior over 1:1 row proportion and sole crops. Higher maize equivalent yield (8068 kg ha-i), gross returns (Rs.40,519 ha-^), net returns (Rs. 29,054 ha-i) and B:C ratio (2.53) were recorded in maize + Frenchbean (1:2) intercropping system. Thus, maize + Frenchbean/Rajmash in 1:2 row proportion was found promising intercropping system in the Northern Transitional Zone of Karnataka. | en_US |
