A STUDY ON KNOWLEDGE AND EXTENT OF ADOPTION OF IMPROVED CULTIVATION PRACTICES BY TURMERIC GROWERS IN BELAGAVI DISTRICT

| dc.description.abstract | The present study was conducted during 2017-18 in Belagavi district of Karnataka to analyse knowledge and extent of adoption of improved cultivation practices in turmeric and to enlist the constraints faced and suggestions given by turmeric growers. A total of 120 respondents were selected randomly which includes 60 respondents from Gokak and Raibag taluks because production, productivity and area under turmeric was found to be maximum. The findings of the study revealed that, 48.33 per cent of turmeric growers had high level of overall knowledge about improved practices in turmeric cultivation followed by medium (30.00 %) and low (21.67 %) categories, respectively. 47.50 per cent of turmeric growers belongs to medium level of overall adoption, followed by high (32.50 %) and low (20.00 %) level overall adoption. The variables viz., education, landholding, annual income, extension contact, extension participation, risk orientation, farming experience, achievement motivation, market orientation, economic motivation, innovativeness and scientific orientation had significant relationship with knowledge and adoption level of turmeric growers. The major constraints of turmeric growers were scarcity of labour, high labour wages (96.67 %) and more incidence of diseases and pest (84.17 %). The turmeric growers have suggested to supply of inputs at subsidized rates (85.00 %), fixing of MSP to turmeric (80.83 %) and regular technical & extension functionaries visit to their field (75.83 %). | en_US |
