Abstract
The study entitled “Studies on Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq) based agroforestry system and its nursery management” was carried out at Agroforestry unit, L block, ZARS, GKVK, Bengaluru during 2020-21. The main experiment consisted of ten treatments which were replicated three times under RCBD. In nursery experiment, nine seed treatments were replicated three times under CRD. The results showed that the seeds of Swietenia mahagoni pre-treated with the mixture of cow urine and water in the ratio of 1:1 and soaked for period of 12 hours has recorded significantly higher germination percentage (66.30%), germination rate (0.33), vigour index (2994), root to shoot length ratio (0.61), mean daily germination (0.74) and seedling length (88.82 cm). The accumulated litterfall for the study duration was recorded to be 5549 t ha-1 and the verage decomposition rate constant of Swietenia mahagoni leaf and rachis was found to be 0.23 month-1 and 0.14 k month-1, respectively. Carbon sequestration potential of Swietenia mahagoni was observed to be 206.95 t ha-1. Finger millet performed better under Swietenia mahagoni based agroforestry system, in terms of grain (1724 kg ha-1) and straw (2320 kg ha-1) yield. The reduction in grain yield of intercrops of cowpea, green gram, little millet, foxtail millet and finger millet over their sole crops was to the extent of 17.88, 9.26, 16.77, 12.65 and 7.16 per cent, respectively
