PERFORMANCE OF EARLY GENERATION PROGENIES DERIVED THROUGH POLLEN SELECTION FOR HEAT TOLERANCE AND SEED YIELD IN MAIZE (Zea mays L.)

dc.description.abstractThirty six F3 progenies were evaluated in two replications under field condition for heat tolerance, seed yield and yield components. The progenies were derived through different cycles of pollen selection for heat tolerance - pollen selection in F1 and F2 (GG), pollen selection only in F1 (GC) and no pollen selection (CC). The pollen selection treatment recorded significant variability for SPAD Chlorophyll Meter Reading (SCMR), anthesis-silking interval (ASI), membrane leakage, days to anthesis and plant height. The GG group of progenies recorded higher mean values for seed yield and yield related component traits compared to CC group under heat stress. Further, the pollen selection treatment did not show any negative influence when the progenies were grown under normal conditions. Twenty five F4 lines comprising of five lines each from GGG (Pollen selection in F1, F2 and F3), GCG (Pollen selection in F1 and F3 but no pollen selection in F2), GGC (Pollen selection in F1 and F2 but no pollen selection in F3), GCC (Pollen selection in F1 but no pollen selection in F2 and F3), CCC (without pollen selection) were tested for seedling heat tolerance. The pollen selection cycles recorded significant effect on seedling tolerance for F4 progenies of GGG treatment recorded higher root length, shoot length and seedling establishment confirming the utility of pollen selection in early generation. The GGG lines possessed higher frequency of male parent alleles as indicated by SSR markers thus emphasizing the potentiality of this method through molecular genetic evidence.en_US
