Agriculture in India is predominantly production oriented confined to large number of fragmented small holdings and plays a pivotal role in Indian economy. Small-holder farmers are the core of agricultural production as 85% of operational holdings are smaller than or about two hectares. Indian small farmers face multifold problems, these issues include lack of information, poor communication networks with wider markets, low access to credit and high cost of credit, exploitation of intermediaries in procuring the inputs and marketing the produce, low scale of operation and in some cases, harsh loan recovery practices (Sriram, 2008). The agricultural sector needs well-functioning of markets to drive growth, employment and economic prosperity in rural areas of India. Substantial investments are essential for expansion of postharvest and cold-chain near to farmer fields to provide strength and efficiency into marketing system. So, the Indian government has been assisting a form of collectives called Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) for addressing the problems faced by the small and marginal farmers, particularly to provide efficient inputs, to improve access to investments, technological advancements and effortless accessibility to market (Hellin et al. 2009). A Producer organisation is a legal entity which is formed by primary producers, viz. farmers, fishermen, milk producers, craftsmen, rural artisans, weavers. The aggregation of farmers through Producer Organisations (PO) enables farmer members to reap benefits of economies of scale in purchase of inputs, processing and marketing of their produce due to increased bargaining power, with which farmers are able to negotiate better terms of trade and reduce information costs, such as access to market information, technology and innovation. FPOs off late are providing lot of support to small and marginal farmers in terms of inputs, services and marketing of produce. In Telangana state FPOs are perceived as a promising approach to improve state of small and marginal farmers. So, there is a need to evaluate the performance of these organisations along economic and social dimensions. Therefore, the study to assess the performance of FPOs in terms of Governance and management aspects, Economic and financial aspects has been conducted. In addition to it the study also explored the difference in socio-economic status of members and non- members of FPOs, constraints faced by members. The study was conducted in Nagar Kurnool and Wanaparthy districts of Telangana state. A total sample of 240 respondents, 120 members and 120 nonmembers were selected through Simple random sampling by using chit method from four purposively selected Farmer Producer Organisations. Descriptive research design was used for the study. Data were collected using Structured Interview schedule. Data on social, personal, communication characteristics of members of FPO were collected. Performance of FPO was measured using NABARD Performance Measurement Tool. Difference in Socio-economic status of members and Non-members was calculated using Z-test. The findings of the study revealed that seventy-five per cent of the respondents belonged to middle age group and had nuclear family type (81%). Nearly three-fourth of the member farmers were male (71%) and had medium family size (79%). A little more than half of the member farmers (52.5%) are small farmers with land holding of 2.5-5 acres and medium farming experience (72.5%). Nearly three-fourth of the member farmers adopted irrigated farming. Results revealed that majority of the respondents (68.34%) had medium level of extension agency contact, medium social participation (71%), medium level of mass media exposure (62.5%). Majority of the member farmers (59%) had medium level of cosmopoliteness , medium level of risk preference (61.5%) and medium level of economic motivation (65.84%). Most of the member farmers owned Television (91.6%). Results regarding performance of FPOs revealed that Kollapur Farmer Producer Company Limited was under Grade-A, Panugal Farmer Producer Company Limited was under Grade-B, Wanaparthy Girijana Fruit Producer Company Limited was under Grade-C and Thimmaipally Thanda Farmer Producer Company Limited was under Grade-B. The findings related to socio-economic status revealed that a little more than onefourth (27.5%) of member farmers were educated up to middle school and little less than one-fourth (23.5%) of non-members were educated up to middle school, 37.5 per cent of member farmers were having Agriculture as primary occupation and 33.34 per cent of non-members were unskilled workers. Nearly half (46.66%) of the member farmers were in the medium annual income category and 34.16 per cent non-members were in semi-medium annual income category. A little more than one-third of member farmers were in middle-class category and half of the non-members (50.83%) were in lower middle-class category. The socio-economic status of members of FPOs was found significantly better than the non-members of Farmer Producer Organisations. The opinion of respondents regarding constraints faced by them in FPOs revealed that irregular procurement of produce (93.33%), lack of well-developed storage facilities (86.66%), there was competition among villages for getting benefits (91%) were major constraints reported by members. Thus on the basis of findings it can be concluded that FPOs can ameliorate the conditions of small and marginal farmers resulting in their socioeconomic betterment.en_US
