dc.description.abstractA study was carried out in broilers from day-old to 6 weeks of age to evaluate the effect of different levels of amla and vitamin C supplementation in corn-soya based diet (control group) on growth performance, plasma antioxidant status, corticosterone and glucose, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoproteins and thyroxine. Amla contained high amount of vitamin C (729.56 mg/100g in fresh pulp and 333.38 mg/100g in dried pulp). The addition of different levels of amla and vitamin C did not improve body weight but amla at 1 per cent level in feed reduced the feed consumption with better feed efficiency. Feeding of amla and vitamin C at various levels, did not produce any significant difference in plasma levels of glutathione peroxidase, reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase whereas plasma malonaldehyde level was significantly reduced in the supplemented groups. The mean plasma corticosterone level was reduced after adreno corticotrophin injection. Plasma glucose, serum total cholesterol, serum high density lipoproteins, serum thyroxine level were not influenced by supplementing amla and vitamin C. Serum triglycerides was significantly (P<0.01) reduced in the treatment groups compared to control. It is concluded that supplementation of amla upto 2 per cent of diet and vitamin C did not improve body weight and feed efficiency but improved anti-oxidant status in broilers.en_US
