Abstract
Animals with clinical and subclinical infections of Johne's disease shed Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis (MAP) bacteria in both milk and feces. Contamination of milk by MAP is widely reported in cattle. Milk is a potential source of disease transmission in young animals and milk has also been implicated as a potential source of MAP for humans since viable organisms have been recovered from commercial pasteurized milk (Grant et al., 2002). MAP has been isolated from confirmed cases of Crohn's disease in humans, indicating its zoonotic potential (Singh et al., 2008).
