Abstract
Testes of 30 adult Marwari sheep were used for the present study. The testis were examined for shape, colour and measurements of length, breadth, thickness, circumference, volume and weight of testes as well as body weight were observed and recorded. The shapes of testes were ellipsoidal and reddish white in colour in fresh state The average parameters for left testes were non significantly higher than the right one. Histologically, the capsule of testes was made up of collagen and reticular fibres which was rich in blood vessels. Average thickness of capsule was 363.34±21.28 µm. The septula testis divided the testicular parenchyma into pyramidal lobules. The seminiferous tubules were lined by spermatogenic cells and Sertoli cells. The average thickness of seminiferous tubules, width of spermatogenic cells and Sertoli cells were144.89±4.46 µm, 6.862±0.46 µm and 9.433±0.38 µm, respectively. Sertoli cells were observed with base attached to the wall of tubules and upper portion towards the lumen. Spermatogenic cells were seen in radial arrangement at various stages of division and maturation along with elongated spermatozoa attached to Sertoli cells. The mediastinum testis occupied a central position along the longitudinal axis of testis which lodged the rete testis. It consisted of irregularly anastomosing channels lined by simple cuboidal to simple squamous epithelium. The ductus epididymis was lined by pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium. The pseudostratified epithelium of epididymal tubule had 3 cell types, viz. principal cells, basal cells and apical cells. The interstitial tissue occupied the area between the adjacent seminiferous tubules. It was composed mainly of collagen and reticular fibres and Leydig cells. The average width of Leydig cells was 6.351±0.37 µm. The basement membrane of seminiferous tubules, spermatid, spermatozoa, Leydig cells and Sertoli cells showed moderate to weak periodic acid Schiff (PAS) reaction.
