dc.description.abstractTheroleofpublicextensionsysteminthetransferoftechnologyhad immensely contributed to the achievement ofGreen Revolution in the Sixties. However, escalating fiscaldeficits,highcostandlowimpactofpublicextension serviceshadredirectedourattentiontoseekassistancefromalternativesourceslike privateagencies. Hencethepresentstudywasundertakentostudythepro fi leofrose cultivators, identify the technological and other services suitable for privatisation,andfindouttheiropiniontowardsprivatisationofextensionservices. Ex—postfactoresearchdesignwasadoptedforthestudy. Thestudywasconducted in9villagesof3 mandalsfromRangaReddy districtofAndhraPradeshand 120rosecultivators(small,mediumandbigfarmers)wereselectedby proportionate random sampling method. Rosebeing a technology oriented and commerciallyprofitable flowercrop,wasselectedforthestudy. Thedatawere collectedfromtheselectedrespondentsbyusingtheinterviewscheduledeveloped forthepurpose. Majorityoftherespondentsweremiddleaged,withprimarylevelofeducation,mediumfarmers, havinganareaof25~45acresoflandunderflowercrops,irrigatedareaof0_5—2.5acres,annualincomeofRs.15000—25000,having medium experience in rose cultivation, medium information source utilisation, mediumlevelofknowledgeonrosecultivation,highmanagementorientationand mediumachievementmotivation. Thetechnologicalservicesnamely,advicetosolvespecificproblemsinthe field,informationonpropagationmethods,hormones/plantgrowthregulatorsandprovidinginformationservicesfortimeandmethodofpruningwhileinput services namely; SUpply ofplant growth regulators and packing material were identifiedforprivatisationbymajorityoftherespondents. Guaranteedeffectofthe advice, reasonable charges and advice inthe farmer’s field were the conditions expressedbythemajorityofthefarmersforpaymentstowardsextensionservices. Regardingtheopinionon privatisationofextensionservices, morefavourable and favourable categories accounted for 67.5 per cent, while less favourableaccountedfor32.5percentofthetotalrespondents. Theresultsalso revealedthattherewasasignificantdifferencebetweensmallandbigfarmersand smallandmediumfarmerswithrespecttotheiropiniononprivatisationofextension services. .Privatisationdemandspromptness,punctuality,technicalcompetenceand improves the work culture among government extension workers in providing services,privatisationpaveswayforpartialwithdrawlofgovernmentsupportfrom extensionservicesthusreducingburdenongovernmentwerethestatementsranked firstandsecondrespectivelybasedontheirmeanscores. Amongtheselectedindependentvariables,education,farmsize,area under flower crops, irrigatedarea, annual income, experience in rose cultivation, information source utilisation, knowledge on rose cultivation, management orientation and achievement motivation had shown positive and signi ficant relationshipwiththedependent variable i.e., opinionon privatisation ofextension services. Ontheotherhand,agewasnegatively andnon-signi ficantlyrelatedwith thedependentvariable. Majority ofthe respondents perceived that identifying the private agenciesforprovidingextensionservices,encouragingprivateindividualsor firms toregisterasconsultancyfirmswiththeGovernmentwerethechangingrolesofthe government extension functionaries in the context ofprivatisationofextension services.en_US
