Abstract
The present investigations were undertaken to evaluate the nutritional quality of several varieties of four different fodder grasses it1
relation to : dry matter, crude fibre, carbohydrate, crude protein, ash,
minerals, sugars, neutral detergent fibre, in vitro dry matter digestibility,
non protein nitrogen and total phenolics. The different varieties were
analysed and the data obtained were computed for statistical analysis in
Completely Randomized Design (CRD).
The dry matter content in different varieties ranged from
24.19 to 44.81 per cent. It was highest in IGFRI-525 of cenchrus grass
while lowest in .V. seabrana-\041\0 of Stylo grass. The crude fibre content
ranged from 20.70 %, in S. seabrana-\041\0 to 40.17 % in RBN-91-7
variety. The crude protein content ranged from 2.73 to 13.8 per cent.
Lowest found in cenchrus grass (IGFRI-3 108) and highest among guinea grass (PGG-631). The ash content of fodder grasses exhibited a wide
variation of 5.50 to 16.26 per cent. The calcium content ranged from 0.28
to 1.23 per cent, potassium from 0.51 to 3.91 per cent, phosphorus from
0.20 to 0.42 per cent, iron from 58.4 to 135.4 mg/ 100 g. The manganese,
zinc and copper content of fodder cultivars varied from 1.08 to 3.70, 2.84
to 14.76 and 1.32 to 20.02 mg/100 g, respectively. The total sugars
content ranged from 25.31 (CN-46) to 92.90 mg/100 g (S. seabrana
104710). The neutral detergent fibre and in vitro dry matter digestibility
ranged from 54.91 to 75.58 per cent and 26 6 to 65.0 per cent. Highest
NDF was found in PGG-9 (C), while highest IVDMD was found in RBN
91-7 variety of Bajra x Napier grass hybrid. The non-protein nitrogen
content and total phenolic compounds content ranged from 0.21 to 0.85 per
cent and 13.97 to 71.32 mg/100 gm, respectively.
Among the four grasses and their thirty five varieties, NB-21
(C), BN-9202 and Ham (C) varieties of Bajra x Napier grass hybrid, PGG
489, PGG-518, PGG-9 (C), PGG-631 of guinea grass and ,S. seabrana105546 kB\ S. seabranaA 10370 (C), S. seabrana-\\0312 of stylo grass
were the varieties with higher amount of dry matter, crude protein,
minerals NDF and IVDMD.
Amongst the four grasses, guinea grass was found to be
superior over other three grasses ranked as : Stylo, Bajra x Napier grass
hybrid and Cenchrus.
