Abstract
Thepresentstudyentitled"Freshwateraquaculture(freshwater prawn+fishandprawn)inNelloreDistrictofAndhraPradesh-An EconomicAnalysis”wasundertakenmainlytostudythecostsandreturns, resource use efficiency on fresh water aquafarms along with marketing aspects ofprawn andfish. Nelloredistrictwas purposivelychosenforthe studyasitisoneofleadingdistrictsinfreshwateraquafarming.Thestudy wasconductedinIndukurpetandMuthukurmandalsofNelloredistrictwith maximumwaterspread area underfreshwateraquafarming.SixVillages, three from eachselectedmandal practicingfresh waterprawn+fish and exclusiveprawnfarmingwereselectedpurposivelyusingtheabovecriterion ofmaximumwaterspreadareaunderfreshwateraquafarming.Asampleof 60farmerseachfromtheabovetwotypesoffreshwateraquafarmingwas chosenrandomlycomprising30small(<1.21hawaterspreadarea)and30 large(>1.2haofwaterspreadarea)farmers,thusmakingthetotalsample sizeto120aquafarmers.Thedatawerecollectedfortheagriculturalyear 1998— 1999throughsurveymethod. Bothtabularandfunctionalanalyses wereemployedtoanalysethesetobjectives. Onanaverage180.34mandayswereemployedonprawn+fishfarms, whereas,thecorresponding figureforexclusivefreshwaterprawnfarming stoodat154.83mandays. Theaveragetotalcostofcultivationandgrossreturnsperhectareof prawn + fish were Rs.1,08,91467 and Rs. 2,19,134.44 and the same for prawncultivationstoodatRs. 1,18,342.08andRs.2,65,41890respectively. Theaveragenetreturnsperhectarerealisedfromprawnwerehigher(Rs. 1,52,076.87)comparedtoprawn+ fish(Rs. 1,10,224.77)cultivation. Analysisofbenefit—costratiorevealedthatthenetreturnsperrupee ofexpenditurewashigherincaseofprawn(Rs.1.34)thanprawn+fish(Rs. 1.01).Itwasalsoobservedthatthelargefarmswererelativelymoreefficient thansmallfarmsinproducingbothfreshwaterprawn+ fishandprawn. Results offunctional analysisrevealed thatfertilizers andfeedhad positively significant impact on the yields and showed greater scope for furtheruseintheproductionofbothfreshwaterprawn+ fishandprawn. The prawn farmer realised 52.79 per cent ofconsumer’s rupeein marketingoffreshwaterprawnandin fishmarketing,producer’ssharein consumer’srupeewashighestinchannel11(63.25) comparedtochannelI (48.45percent).
