Abstract
Many reports of drug resistance involve the benzimidazole group of anthelmintic (Hunt and Taylor, 1989) and several techniques have been developed to detect the presence of parasites resistant in such animals (Taylor and Hunt, 1989). The ovicidal properties of benzimidazoles were exploited to detect resistance based on the proportion of eggs failing to hatch in solutions of increasing drug concentrations (Le Jambre, 1976; Coles and Simkins, 1977). However, only few reports on benzimidazole resistance in sheep are available in Southern India, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Hence, the present study was designed to detect the resistance to the most commonly used anthelmintic viz. benzimidazole group of drugs against the gastrointestinal parasites of sheep by in vitro egg hatch assay using albendazole as the reference drug.
