The present study: “Effect of biofloc technology on growth and immune response of Nile tilapia, O. niloticus” was conducted in the Wet Laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture, College of Fishery Science, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Muthukur. A 60 day indoor trail was carried out to evaluate biofloc and biofloc cum substrate based rearing systems on the growth performance, non-specific immune response of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings. The C/N ratio of 15 was maintained in three biofloc treatments viz., T1 (only biofloc), T2 (biofloc + bamboo) and T3 (biofloc + nylon mat substrates) using wheat flour as carbon source along with control (without biofloc and substrate). Each “Effect of biofloc technology on growth and immune response of Nile tilapia, O. niloticus” Master of Fishery Science in Aquatic Animal Health Management Department of Aquatic Animal Health Management group consisted of four replicate aquarium tanks of 70 lit capacity with each tank stocked with 15 fingerlings (4.40 g±0.05) of O. niloticus for growth performance. The water quality parameters viz., DO, water temperature, pH, TAN, NO2-N and NO3-N were in manageable range for tilapia. At the end of the study period blood and serum samples were collected for the evaluation of hematological, non-specific immune and stress parameters. The results indicated that tilapia reared in treatment groups showed significantly (p<0.05) higher performance, than the control. Among the treatments, T2 has shown higher serum protein, anti-protease activity, lysozyme activity and lower serum glucose and cortisol when compared to T3 and T1. Growth, food conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency ratio (FER) and specific growth rate (SGR) of fishes in biofloc (T1) and biofloc cum substrate (T2 and T3) treatments were significantly (p<0.05) higher than the control. The treatment T2 showed significantly higher RBC, WBC, platelet count, Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH and MCHC values than the treatments T3, T1 and control. The study revealed that, tilapia reared in biofloc based culture system in combination with substrates for periphyton growth can enhance growth, non-specific immune response and lower stress under minimal water exchange and restricted feeding.en_US
