A novel premix formulation of Chlormequat chloride and Tebuconazole for lodging prone crops: Development and evaluation in wheat crop

dc.description.abstractAmongst the various physiological stresses faced by wheat, lodging is one major limiting factor in wheat production. One approach to induce lodging resistance is through application of plant growth retardants. Chlormequat chloride and azole group of fungicides like Tebuconazole have been reported effective individually or together in reduction of plant height during early stages in gibberellic acid production. So far, the tank mix composition has been registered in European countries but there is no report on premix formulation. Present work reports preparation, evaluation and physicochemical analysis of a novel premix suspension concentrate formulation of CCC and Tebuconazole. Micronization process through dry milling was standardized to achieve Tebuconazole microparticles in 2-5 µm range. Auxiliaries to be used in formulation namely dispersing and wetting agent (surfactant) and suspending agent (thickener) were identified and standardized w.r.t their stability parameter, suspensibility (CIPAC MT 161). Concentration levels of both the auxiliaries found effective in making a stable formulation were 5.1-5.8% for surfactant B and 0.28-0.5% for thickener type C respectively. The active ingredient load in the final SC formulation was (CCC+ Tebuconazole, 40-60%+7.5-15%) SC. The formulation passed all the physicochemical tests prescribed by CIPAC for SC formulation and was found stable under accelerated storage conditions for 14 days and at 0 C for 7 days. The prepared formulation registered superior bio efficacy results in pot (50% and 19.7% reduction in plant height over control and tank mix, respectively) and field conditions (37% and 29.5% height reduction over control and tank mix, respectively). Study on CCC and Tebuconazole residues and persistence in grain and soil showed that after 60 days, ~98% dissipation was there for both the active ingredients. Half-life of CCC ranged from 10.56-12.33 days and that of Tebuconazole from 9.8-11.58 days. Keywords: Premix, suspension concentrate, CCC, growth retardant, lodgingen_US
