The present investigation entitled "Studies on seed production of onion (Allium cepa L.) as influenced by bulb size and nitrogen levels" was carried out at Horticultural Research Farm, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur (C.G.) during 2001-2002. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomised block design with three replications. The experiment consisted of twelve treatment combinations with three bulb size (Bi:30-60g, 62: 60-90, and B3: 90-120g) and four nitrogen levels (Ni: 40, N2: 80, N3: 120 and N4: 160 kg N/ha.). The large size bulbs gave the better results with respect to plant height, days to 50 percent bolting, number of leaves per plant, numbers of umbels per plant, seed weight per plant, seed yield per plot, seed yield per hectare and 1000- seed weight. On other hand, small size bulbs produced large umbel and more seed weight per umbel in comparison to medium and large size bulbs. The application of 160 kg N/ha, significantly increased the sprouting percentage, plant height, days to 50 percent bolting, diameter of umbel, seed weight per umbel, seed weight per plant, seed yield per plot and per hectare. Seed yield was positively and significantly correlated with plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of umbels per plant, diameter of umbel, seed weight per plant and 1000- seed weight. The highest net return and benefit cost ratio were recorded under small size bulbs with 160 kg N/ha which was closely followed by small size bulbs with 120 kg N/ ha.en_US
