Mosaic dis~ase of betelvine Piper betle L.) was characterised by mild vein-·clearin·g ,gradually developing into interveinal chlorosis resulting in mosaic pattern. The infected plants also showed leaf distortions and stunted growth. At severe stages of infection the emerging leaves became completely yellow. The virus was readily transmitted by sap inoculation with an incubation period ranging between 17 to 21 days It was also transmitted through stem cuttings and approach grafting. The virus was found to produce necrotic local lesions on ~oybean ( Glycine max ) The virus had a longevity 1D vitro of 11 h at room temperature . dilution end point of 1o-4 and thermal inactivation point of 5~ C. Purification of mosaic affected leaves showed mixed infection containing isometric particles 25 nm in diameter and rod shaped particles of very small size at 60.000 magnification. Histopathological changes induced in the leaf of a virus infected betelvine plant showed poor development of mesophyll and parenchyma. The midrib was smaller. xylem and phloem strands were under developed . On secreening varieties for phenol and essential oil content it was observed, pungent varieties Godibangla Gachipan. karapaku and Bangla (resistant varieties) higher phenol and essential oil content compared to non . pungent commercial varieties Tellaku-Nandyal and Tellaku- Ponnur (susceptible varieties). The rate of spread of mosaic disease in an infected garden from a diseas~d plant to healthy one was faster in the J i initial stages of infection and gradually decreased with progress of time . The incidence and spread of mosaic disease was influecned by weather t~ctors. There was a positive correlation of percentage of disease with maximum temperature and soil moisture in both the gardens and a negative corr ·elation with pH was observed in the second garden .en_US
