Abstract
ABSTRACT The present study on “Development of viable modules for production and marketing of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus)” was carried out on three purposively selected blocks by taking representative 90 farmers. The overall sex ratio in the study area found 956 female for 1000 males. Results revealed that nearly 91.84per cent family member were literate and literacy index was 2.95, indicating average level of quality of education. Cropping intensity was found 154.14 per cent, which indicates that there is a scope for increase in farm efficiency. The average cost of cultivation of carnation varied between Rs- 164692.87 in 500 m2 to Rs – 592384.91 in 2000 m2 .packaging of carnation was generally done in boxes and gunny bags three marketing channels were patronized by the carnation grower however, majority of the produce is marketed through channel II ( Producer – wholesaler – retailer – consumer). The highest marketing cost and marketing margin was found in channel I due to number of market intermediaries. Price fluctuations, non availability of quality planting material, alternatives in the market, non implementation of market regulations, difficulty transport due to perishability, were some of major problems faced by carnation grower in study area. The government should imitate programme for improved cultivation of carnation as it has the potential of comparatively high return plants.
