An investigation was undertaken with a view to study the extent of heterosis/ and general and specific combility effects for 16 characters in brinjal. Nine parents were utilized in diallel mating system, the resulting 36 hybrids along with parents were evaluated during 2002-2003. Significant and positive heterosis was observed for yield and its contributing characters. The percentage of heterotic crosses showing heterosis over better parent were maximum for fruit size index (92.11) followed by total sugars (82), calcium content (60.00), total yield of fruits per plant (51.00), spread of the plant (48.55), iron content (45.19), total number of fruits per plant (41.19), polar diameter (40.22), number of marketable fruits per plant (37.37), plant height (33.58), number of primary branches (23.08), protein percentage (16.11), number of unmarketable fruits per plant (-59.49), days for flowering (-14.88) and days to fruit set (-12.88). Considering the overall performance in respect of important economic characters the most promising hybrids were 4x6 (Krishnakatti x 1AB-107), 3x4 (JB-22 x Krishnakatti), 2x7 (Kranti x Dorli), 2x8 (Kranti x SM-62), 4x5 (Krishnakatti x SM-2), 3x5 (JB-22 x SM-2). The studies on combining ability revealed that the parents P6 (1AB-107), P4 (Krishnakatti), P9 (JB-9) and P3 (JB-22) exhibited good general combining ability for yield and yield contributing characters while the parents P2 (Kranti), P3 (JB-22) and P5 (SM-2) were good general combiners for earliness. The maximum s.c.a. effects were recorded for most of the yield and yield contributing characters. The hybrid 4x6 (Krishnakatti x 1AB-107) recorded highest s.c.a. effects for fruit size index, yield per plant, 3x4 (JB-22 x Krishnakatti) for total number of marketable fruits per plant, total number of fruits per plant, 2x7 (Kranti x Dorli) for polar diameter, equatorial diameter and fruit size index and 2x8 (Kranti x SM-62) for total number of fruits per plant and yield per plant. Incidentally there was most heterotic combinations for yield and other important characters -ytfeje -observed-. The estimates of g.c.a. effects were higher than the s.c.a. effects indicating predominance of i additive type of gene action for most of the characters. The situation, therefore, indicated the possibility of exploitation through hybridization.en_US
