EFFECT OF COFFEE PULP COMPOST AND RICE HULL ASH ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TRANSPLANTED PADDY (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2007 at ZARS, Mudigere to know
the effect of coffee pulp compost and rice hull ash on growth and yield of transplanted paddy.
The experimental treatments consisted of integration of coffee pulp compost, rice hull ash and
chemical fertilizers with three replications.
Application of FYM @ 10 t ha'1 + 100% RDF (standard check) recorded 5.76 t ha'1
grain and 6.97 t ha'1 straw yield. Compared to standard check, application of coffee pulp
compost @ 5 t ha'1 + rice hull ash @ 2 t ha'1 + 50% RDF (6.01 and 7.27 t ha'1) and coffee
pulp compost @ 2.5 t ha'1 + rice hull ash @ 2 t ha'1 + 100% RDF (5.82 and 7.04 t ha'1)
recorded higher grain and straw yield. The variations are due to better crop growth and yield
attributing characters. However, application of FYM @ 10 t ha’1 + rice hull ash @ 2 t ha'1 +
100% RDF recorded highest grain (6.24 t ha'l) and straw yield (7.49 t ha'1). It also recorded
highest N, P and K uptake (170.66, 41.14 and 209.76 kg ha'1, respectively) and more retention
of soil available nutrients after harvest of the crop. This was closely followed by application
of coffee pulp compost @ 5 t ha'1 + rice hull ash @ 2 1 ha'1 + 50% RDF.
The standard check FYM @ 10 t ha'1 + 100% RDF recorded a net returns of Rs.
30246 ha'1 with benefit to cost ratio of 1.88. Compared to this, application of coffee pulp
compost @ 5 t ha-1 + rice hull ash @ 2 t ha'1 + 50% RDF recorded net returns of Rs. 35389
ha'1 followed by application of coffee pulp compost @ 2.5 t ha'1 + rice hull ash @ 2 t ha'1 +
100% RDF (Rs. 33378 ha’1). They recorded benefit cost ratio of 2.73 and 2.48 respectively
and can be recommended for farmers practice.
