Abstract
Participation of women who comprise about 43 per cent of the global agricultural labour force varies considerably between and within agro climatic regions. Even within regions their participation varies based on the crops cultivated. The present study on “Gender Contribution in Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) Cultivation: An Assessment of Women Empowerment” has been conducted in five randomly selected villages of Kundgol taluk which is the highest chilli growing area in Dharwad district. From each village 30 farm women were selected, making a sample of 150. Personal interview method was used to collect the data and suitable statistical tools were used for analysing the data. The local Byadagi Kaddi variety of chilli was grown by most of the respondents families. The respondents were mainly between the ages of 36-50 with low level of education, from joint and medium sized families. Their average land holding was less than five acres with income of less than Rs.1,32,000/annum. The overall participation index was 65.88 meaning that nearly 66 per cent of all activities are carried out by women. Their knowledge was to the extent of 65.83 per cent. Regarding health problems faced majority (82.66%) of the respondents had body ache. The major constraint with respect to chilli cultivation as expressed by many of the respondents was price fluctuation. When the economic contribution was calculated in manday terms her contribution was to the extent of 44 per cent. The overall empowerment index of women involved in chilli cultivation was 56.44. The study revealed that knowledge was significantly related to education, annual income, extension participation and contact with extension agency, while empowerment showed significant relationship with education of respondents and their contact with extension agency.
