The present study was aimed to investigating meteorological and hydrological aspects of droughts, analysis of critical dry spells (CDS) and supplemental irrigation planning for CDS duration in Kharun sub basin of Mahanadi river system. The study includes estimation of long-term seasonal and annual rainfall departure, probability distribution analysis of annual and seasonal rainfall, Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI)to explore the pattern of monthly rainfall anomalies and occurrence of seasonal and annual meteorological drought events for the period from 1981 to 2015 in the study basin. The analysis include determination the critical dry spells (CDS) and estimation of supplemental irrigation requirement during CDS for kharifcrops. The study also includes estimation of Stream Flow Drought Index, Ground Water Drought Index & Reservoir Storage Index to assess hydrological droughts in the Kharun sub basin. Analysis of rainfall records for 10 raingauge (RG) stations revealed that the drought occurs in different parts of the basin with average frequency of once in 5 years to once in 8 years. It was found that Durg, Raipur and Dhamdha RG stations of study basin are more susceptible to meteorological drought situation. The other RG stations in basin have good overall probability of receiving a moderate quantity of total annual and seasonal rainfall. The SPI analysis on multiple time scale reveal that selection of time scale plays significant role in analyzing the past meteorological drought events in a given place/region.SPI analysis on multiple timescale reveals that September month have greater rainfall anomalies followed by August and June. The Kharun sub basin has sufficient length of wet season (on average about 104 days). For safe crop cultivation in the basin appropriate provisions of supplemental irrigation was investigated to cope up with intervening prolonged dry spells periods. A bad monsoon year in the basin usually incorporates two to three intervening critical dry spells and these dry spells often cause most crop loss and seasonal water scarcity conditions. The estimated crop water requirement for paddy (Oryza sativa), maize (Zea mays), Soybean, Cauliflower, and potato were found to be the 401.6, 266.7, 329.9, 276.2 and 316.7 mm respectively. The estimates of crop water requirement and effective rainfall for critical dry spell may provide useful information to the water managers for the planning of supplemental irrigation and agricultural water management in the basin. The analysis revealed that the streamflow drought events started during late monsoon or post monsoon period often continued till arrival of next monsoon. It also was observed that the streamflow drought events follow the meteorological droughts/CDS. The ground water drought analysis for 11 well stations indicates that the all wells of basin experienced drought mostlyin year 2009, 2010 and the ground water level of basin declined significantly in pre monsoon season. The ground water drought affects the ground water net availability which is 0.424 BCM from year 2005-2015. Reservoir storage index analysis of RavishankarSagar and TandulaJalashayaindicates that the reservoir storage reduced in summer months and highest extreme drought events occurred in year 2000 and 2001 at both the reservoirs. It is believed that this study provide clarity in understanding regional drought problems and can be helpful in basin water planning to cope with dry spells and drought in Kharun basin.en_US
