Abstract
Emu birds are popularly reared in Tamil Nadu for their tender and delicious meat with low cholesterol content. The availability of basic physiological data of emu birds is scanty and not well documented. Hence, an attempt was made to study the normal haematological parameters of emu under Indian climatic conditions. Emu birds reared under the DBT scheme at, University Research Farm, TANUV AS, Chennai-51 and Regional Research Centre, Pudukottai were chosen for the study. Blood samples were collected from 31 apparently healthy birds aged between one and a half to two and a half years old in heparin coated tubes. The samples were analyzed for various haematological parameters such as haemoglobin, packed cell volume (PCV), total erythrocyte count, total leukocyte count, platelet count and differential count as per the standard protocol.
