dc.description.abstractThe search for natural antiviral substances encompasses compounds and metabolites produced by mammalian cells, fungi and plants as well as metal ions which are involved as cofactors in enzymes and metabolic processes in living cells. Since viruses are obligate parasites of mammalian cells, most compounds with antiviral properties also interfere with metabolic processes in the host cell which are required for virus replication. Thus, the search for potent, naturally occurring antiviral drugs is hampered by the lack of specificity of the inhibitory effect. A number of natural and semisynthetic substances derived from natural compounds have helped in elucidating molecular processes which occur during virus replication in mammalian cells.en_US
