Abstract
145 ejaculates harvested from ten Murrah bulls of three age groups stationed at Livestock Research Station, Kattupakkam were studied, for potassium and sodium concentration. The mean concentration of potassium in whole semen, spermatozoa and semina plasma was found to be 98.04±2.77 mg%, 194.84±4.92 mg% and 81.28±2.13 mg% respectively, while mean concentration of sodium was 243±4.09 mg%, 145.10±3.43 mg% and 278.4.28 mg% respectively. The sodium : potassium ratio in semen was found to be 1 : 0.4 and there was a significant negative correlation of -0.26 between sodium and potassium concentrations. Sodium and potassium in seminal plasma were correlated negatively (-0.484) whereas, potassium concentration of the spermatozoa and seminal plasma were correlated positively (+0.275). The effect of age was found to be significant on potassium concentration in semen. Older bulls produce semen with high potassium concentration resulting in poor quality. But age had no effect on sodium concentration. Seasons had no significant effect on both potassium and sodium concentration of buffalo semen.
