Abstract
A five years old pluriparous Murrah buffalo was presented to Large Animal Gynaecology unit with the
history of calved six months back and not showing any estrous signs. On clinical examination, the animal
was found to be normal, free from gross genital abnormalities with good body condition score. On rectal
examination the cervix was closed with flaccid mild uterine tonicity. The ultrasonographic examination
revealed two multiple small follicles (MSF) in the left ovary and 8.5 mm follicle on right ovary. Follicular
study was carried out at day 5, 10 and 15 which revealed a developing follicular pattern followed by atresia.
Based on observations, the case was diagnosed as postpartum anovulatory anestrum-II. The animal was
supplemented with mineral mixture for three weeks. Followed by fixed time artificial insemination using
indigenously prepared progesterone impregnated vaginal sponge for the period of nine days with administrationof Prostaglandin on day eight. Subsequently luteinizing hormone (LH) was administered on day 11 and
three artificial inseminations were done periodically and ovulation was ensured using ultrasonography. The
pregnancy was confirmed on day 24th by ultrasonography. It could be concluded that progesterone treatment
with fixed time artificial insemination (FTAI) along with LH would be the successful approach in postpartum
anestrum buffaloes.
