Coffee is a very important commercial crop of the tropics. Out of the total Indian coffee production, 65 per cent was contributed by Robusta coffee and the rest by Arabica coffee. In Karnataka, there are three major coffee growing districts viz., Chickmagalur, Kodagu and Hassan. Among these, Kodagu stands first in area (83,150 ha), production (73,940metric tonnes) and productivity (about 1,080 kg/ha). The present study was conducted using the information on yearly production (1973 to 2008), monthly wholesale prices and ICO Composite indicator prices (Jan-1995 to Dec-2008, for Karnataka and world market) collected from various published sources and from Coffee board, Bangalore. Polynomials of fifth degree are used to fit the trends in total production, production of Arabica and Robusta varieties. The coefficients are estimated using least square technique. The study shows that the total production, production of Arabica and Robusta varieties had increased over the years with a significant drop after 2002 for total and Arabica production. Box-Jenkins procedure was used to fit ARIMA models for the prices of Arabica and Robusta Coffee varieties. Since the price series were non-stationary, the differenced series were used. The study indicates that the price of Arabica coffee is linearly related to the past year’s prices and the price of Robusta coffee is linearly related to the previous year’s error terms and past year’s prices with existence of significant seasonal moving average (SMA) component. The unequal variance t- test was used to compare the price and production among Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee. The study shows that there is significant difference between production and prices of Arabica and Robusta varieties of Coffee. Engel-Granger method of Cointegration analysis was employed to examine the extent of integration among World and Karnataka Coffee markets. The results of the cointegration tests showed that there is integration between Karnataka and World market prices in case of both Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee.en_US
