| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT : The present work was undertaken to study the prevalence of demodicosis, to record the clinical signs and haemato-biochemical findings, to assess the efficacy of selected therapeutic regimen in dogs affected with generalized demodicosis in and around Gannavaram, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. The prevalence of generalized demodicosis accounted for 53.33 per cent. The breed-wise occurrence showed highest prevalence in Pomeranian followed by mongrel. The age-wise prevalence showed highest occurrence in dogs aged up to 2 years with male predominance. Pustules, alopecia and pruritus were most observed clinical signs. Haematological investigation revealed decreased mean levels of haemoglobin, PCV and increased TLC with neutrophilia. Serum biochemical findings showed mild elevation of total proteins with reduction in albumin. Examination of deep skin scrapings revealed Demodex mites in all dogs with generalized demodicosis. Tape impression smears revealed presence of cocci in all cases indicating concurrent bacterial infection (Pyoderma). Bacterial agents isolated in dogs with generalized demodicosis were Staphylococcus spp, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas spp. The in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity test results revealed that more number of bacterial isolates were sensitive to enrofloxacin and pefloxacin. Combination of oral ivermectin, enrofloxacin, non herbal syrup containing omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids, immunobooster ayurvedic syrup and external application of benzyl peroxide shampoo was found to be useful in the treatment of generalized demodicosis in dogs. | en_US |
