Abstract
Maize (Zea mays L.) bas been known 10 be affected by as maoy as six differen1 species of downy mildew fungi. Among lhem Pero11osclerospora sorghi which causes downy mildew was the mos1 predcminanl one aod bas r<SU11ed in subslaotial eccnomic losses. Thirty four plant species belonging to cereals, legumes and grasses wcte leslcd to know the host range of sorghum downy mildew. Only two viz .. fodder maize (African Tall) (&0.5%) and sorghum (60%) were found to be infec1ed by tbe pathogen and thus these may act as hos1s and remaining planl species were complelely free from infection indicating that Ibey were non hosts. Large nurobct of genotypes belonged 10 different maturil)' groups were screened for sorghum downy mildew which revealed tbal genotypes Euro-I 202, MCH-35, CP-828, Euro-1201, MOl-825, PAC-740 and SMH-3904 were found resistant. tlB-Shakthi and PR0-372 were found to be moder:uely resistanl to the disease Four inbred lines viz., NAl-112, NAl-116, NAl-124 and NAl-137 ou1 of twenl)' four lines developed at Nagenahally, were found to be resislanl Among twenl)' six Maodya maize inbred lines, MAl-15, MAl-19, MAI-22, MAl-29 and MAl-50 were fOUDd resisumt.
