Studies on “Biology and management of spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata (Geyer) on redgram” were conducted at lam farm and in the laboratory, pulses section, lam farm, Guntur during Kharif 2007-2008. Larval incidence of M.vitrata on redgram was first noticed on 17th December and reached on a peak on 15th January coinciding with maximum flowering stage, thereafter population gradually declined. Multiple regression analysis indicated that all the weather variables (maximum and minimum temperatures, morning and evening relative humidity, rainfall) together accounted for 82.1 per cent variation in larval population (R 2 = 0.821) which was significant. However, only minimum temperature showed significant influence independently on variation in larval population. Laboratory studies on biology of M.vitrata on redgram showed that the egg period lasts for 3.60 days. The larva had five instars with mean larval duration of 10.90 days. The pupal period lasted for 6 days. The adults emerged from the pupa with a longevity of 4.10 days. Total life cycle lasted for 24.60 days. Among the twelve insecticides evaluated for their efficacy against M.vitrata, treatments like spinosad (0.015%) and proclaim (0.0025%) were effective in suppressing the inflorescence damage. Next effective treatments were flubendiamide (0.006%), novaluron (0.01%), indoxacarb (0.0145%), thiodicarb (0.075%), rynaxypyr (0.009%), lufenuron (0.01%), chlorpyriphos (0.05%) + dichlorvos (0.1%), pyridalyl (0.002%). Spinosad, rynaxypyr, novaluronand proclaim were found effective in reducing pod damage by 52.10,45.78,45.41 and 44.96 per cent overcontrol respectively. Higher yields were obtained in plots treated with spinosad (1518.40 kg/ha), indoxacarb (1388.16 kg/ha) and flubendiamide (1335.76 kg/ha).en_US
