Abstract
ABSTRACT
The present study entitled “Seed source variations in Bauhinia vahlii Wight &
Arn.” was carried out under the department of Tree Improvement & Genetic Resources of
Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry Nauni, Solan (H.P.) during 2019-20
by selecting the trees of Bauhinia vahlii in four districts comprising of ten seed sources i.e.
Nurpur (S1), Dunera (S2) district Kangra, Ramshahar (S3) district Solan, Rangas (S4), Balduk
(S5) district Hamirpur, Kuthar (S6) district Solan, Tauni devi (S7) district Hamirpur, Kathar
(S8) district Sirmour, Dharbanar (S9) and Bhojnagar (S10) district Solan with an aim to
evaluate the seed sources on the basis of various parameters viz, morphological and floral
characteristics, seed traits and nursery stage growth performance of half-sibs. The maximum
average leaf length (23.8 cm) was found in Dunera. The maximum average leaf breadth (19.9
cm) and average pod length (23.3 cm) was found from Nurpur area collections. Bhojnagar
seed source proved better for seed weight (136.9 g), seed germination (91.11 %) and nursery
growth performances mainly for seedling height (34.87 cm) and collar diameter (9.29 mm).
Highly significant correlation was found between collar diameter and other growth characters
namely seedling height, internodal length and number of leaves in half-sib progenies. Pod
length has shown highly significant correlation with leaf length and leaf area of seed bearing
trees. The genetic estimates worked out for mother tree leaf area and leaf length has shown
promising possibilities for heritability (0.35) and genetic gain (10.15) respectively. The
nursery growth performance of seedling height was estimated to show accountable genetic
gain (16.17%) and high heritability (0.68) for leaf length
