Abstract
The present studywas undertaken inand around Hanamkonda mandal to findoutthefactorswhichinfluenceproductionandmarketingofbroilers. The studywasundertaken through survey method by selecting 40 broiler farms,representingsmall(upto6000birdsperyear)medium(6001-12000birdsper year)andlarge(12001andabovebirdsperyear) The average number ofbroiler birds per farm were 3,735, 9,043.8 and 14,7416insmall,mediumandlargefarmswithanaverageof8,173.12birdsforthe sampleasawhole.Theaveragesizeofthefamilywas4.47forallfarms.50percent ofadultmaleswereengagedinbroilerfarmingwhilefemalesaccountedto33percent children17.5percent.Only5percentwereilliterates,remainingwereeducated'upto primary(27.5%),secondary(42.5%)andcollegelevel(25.0%).Broilerfarmingwas consideredasmainoccupationby55percentofthesampledfarmerswithanaverage landholdingof2,76ac.Majorityofthefarmersstartedthebroilerfarmswiththeir owncapital. Majorityofthefarmersselectedvencobbstrainandindicatedthatthe feedefficiencyasthemostimportantdecisivefactorisselectionofastrain.Lessthan 1/4 oftherespondents indicated mortalityasadecisive factorinthe selection of broiler strain followed by timely availabilityofthe strain and price ofthe strain. Majorityofthefarmersadoptedall-in—alI—outsystemoffarmingfollowedbymonthly andfortnightlyrotation. CapitalinvestmentperbirdwasRs.6.15andisdirectlyrelatedtothesizeofthefarm.Productioncostsperbirdwasinverselyrelatedtosizeofthefarm.Feed constitutedthemostimportantiteminproductionfollowedbychickcost.TheFeed EfficiencyRatio, PerformanceEfficiencyFactoraredirectly relatedto farm size. Grossreturns,netreturns,input-outputratioalsoindicatedadirectrelationshipwith farmsize. Theregressionanalysisrevealedthatfeedcostand flocksizewerethemostin fluencingfactorsindecidingtheprofitabilityofthebroilerfarming. Benefitcost ratioincreasedwiththesizeofthefarm. Marketed surplusalsoshowed adirect relationshipwithfarmsize.Themaximumshareofmarketedsurpluswasdisposedoff throughwholesalers.Itwasfoundthatinthethirdchannel(P-C),theproducersshare inconsumer'srupeewasthehighestfollowedbyProducer-Retail—Consumer(P—R-C) andProducer—Wholesaler—Retailer—Consumerchannel(P—W—R—C). Fromthestudyitwasfoundthattheforemostproductionprobleminbroilerfarming waspoorqualityofthechickswithhighmortalityratefollowedbyfeedandcostofchicks. Lackoforganisedmarketing, delayinliftingofbirdsbythewholesalersorretailersweretheimportantproblemsinthemarketingofbroilers.Thereisneedfor greater integration ofbroiler industry with active government participation by providingsubsidiesonfeed,feedingredientsetc.resultinginawiderchoiceofinput utilisationandtherebyresultinginrapiddevelopmentandexpansionofbroilerfarm industry.
